In Life at Home, Tips & Advice

You’ve purchased a new home! That’s great. The next step? Packing up those memories and moving into your new space. Whether you’re moving across town or to a new city altogether, making sure your packing and unpacking game plans are ready is an important step.

If you’re feeling a little overwhelmed about tackling this particular feat, we’ve rounded up our best tips to make moving to a new home a breeze.

Donate or Sell. Before your move it’s imperative to take the opportunity to get rid of household items, furniture and clothing you don’t use regularly. Just think, the less items you pack or plan to take, the less you have to unpack! Take some time to clean out your closets and get rid of any clothing you haven’t worn in years or your family has grown out of. Donate to a local clothing drive or have a garage sale. Selling bulkier furniture reduces the number of large items you have to transport and gives you an opportunity to redecorate once you’re set up.

Set Up Utilities. Make sure your home is move-in ready. Cancel services at your old home and schedule set up for services in your new home, including cable, Internet, utilities, etc. Arrange for water and electric (at least) to be turned on the day before arriving so you’ll be prepared for your first night in your new home. If you’re setting up new utilities or transferring your service, make sure the company you decide on is notified well in advance to ensure a smooth transition. That way you aren’t scrambling to get your family set up and have access to basic necessities.

Organize Boxes. Clearly label boxes or use a colored sticker to mark which room each box goes in. That way you can reduce the amount of confusion when everything is newspaper, bubble wrap and towers of boxes. Ensuring boxes go to the correct room will speed up the unpacking process and keep things organized.

First Day Box. Reserve a box to keep a few changes of clothing, bed linens, toothbrushes and important items like a first aid kit, your marriage license, social security cards or expensive jewelry. Keep this box with you on the way to the new place so it doesn’t get lost in the maze of boxes. Once you’ve arrived at your new home, place it in a safe spot so you’ll know where to find the essentials.

Unpack the Bathroom & Kitchen. The first rooms to unpack when you make it to the new place should be the bathroom and kitchen. Place items in the pantry and make sure bathrooms have the necessities. Being able to cook a quick meal or take a shower at the end of the day will make the move-in bearable.

Set Up Beds. Rome wasn’t built in a day! Unpacking an entire home takes time and you don’t want to overwork yourself. Don’t stress about unpacking in one day. Set up your bed(s) so that you have somewhere to relax after a long day of organizing and unpacking. Your “first day” box that you equipped with bed linens and tooth brushes is sure to come in handy!

One Room at a Time. Next step is to take it one room at a time. Since you organized boxes with labels or colored stickers, moving from room-to-room should be a lot easier. Position larger furniture items where you think they look best, then focus on smaller items. Set goals to finish specific rooms by a certain date or time.

While it can be difficult to leave your old home behind, setting yourself up for a smooth transition can help make your move enjoyable for you and your family.
